MONTESSORI EDUCATION

Maria Montessori was an Italian Doctor of Medicine.  The concept of Montessori and the Montessori Method was created by her.  She based this new education on her scientific observations of young children and their behavior.  As the first woman physician to graduate from the University of Rome, Montessori became involved with education treating children labeled as “retarded.”  She used developmentally appropriate materials to stimulate the children and for them to work with.  As a result of observation, further study, and experimentation, she developed a method applicable to all children.

MONTESSORI PHILOSOPHY

Montessori is a philosophy with the fundamental tenet that a child learns best within a social environment which supports each individual’s unique development.  One basic idea of the Montessori philosophy is that carried unseen within each child is the person the child will become.  To develop to the fullest physical and intellectual potential and for the love of learning, the child must have freedom- achieved through order and self-discipline.
